SEO FAQ: Answers for Small Business Owners
Search engine optimisation attracts a lot of jargon and a fair few inflated promises.
These are the questions we're asked most often by business owners in Warragul, Pakenham, Traralgon and across Gippsland, answered plainly.
If you're new to the topic, start with our guide to what search engine optimisation is.
Getting started with SEO
What is SEO and how does it work?
SEO is the work of making your website easier for search engines to understand and more useful to the people searching. Google looks at hundreds of signals, but for most small businesses the ones that matter are relevant, well-written pages, a site that loads quickly and works on phones, clear local information, and other reputable sites referring to you. Our overview of how search engine optimisation works covers the basics in more depth.
How long does SEO take to show results?
Usually months, not weeks. Google’s own guidance suggests improvements often take somewhere between four months and a year to have full effect. A local business in a less competitive niche may see movement sooner; a crowded Melbourne market will take longer. Be wary of anyone promising page-one results in 30 days. We explain realistic expectations in SEO for small business: what actually works.
How much does SEO cost for a small business in Australia?
It depends on how competitive your market is, the state of your current website and how much ground you need to cover. A tradie servicing a handful of Gippsland towns needs far less than an online store competing nationally. Rather than pick a package off a price list, ask what specific work will be done each month and how progress will be reported. Get in touch for a quote based on your actual situation.
Can anyone guarantee a #1 ranking on Google?
No. Google itself states that no one can guarantee a top ranking. Search results change constantly and vary by location, device and search history. A guarantee is a red flag: it often means ranking for obscure phrases nobody searches, or using tactics that risk a penalty later. Judge SEO on enquiries, calls and sales, not a single ranking screenshot.
What’s the difference between SEO and Google Ads?
Google Ads puts you at the top of results immediately, but traffic stops the moment you stop paying. SEO earns unpaid (organic) visibility that builds over time and keeps working, but takes longer to establish. Many businesses use ads for quick leads while SEO gains traction. Local SEO
What is local SEO?
Local SEO focuses on searches with local intent, such as “electrician Warragul” or “accountant near me”. It covers your Google Business Profile, consistent business name, address and phone details across the web, location-relevant pages and reviews. Work through our local SEO checklist for Gippsland businesses to see where you stand.
How important is my Google Business Profile?
For most local businesses it’s one of the most important things you control. Your profile drives the map results that appear for local searches, often above the standard listings. Choose accurate categories, keep hours current, add real photos and respond to reviews. Our guide to getting the most from your Google Business Profile walks through each step.
I service several towns. Do I need a page for each one?
Often, yes, but only if each page is genuinely useful. Copying one page and swapping the town name tends to perform poorly and Google may treat it as low-value. A good location page includes local detail, relevant projects and specifics about how you service that area. See our multi-location SEO guide, or our local pages for Pakenham, Traralgon and Morwell businesses.
Your website and SEO
Does website design affect SEO?
Yes. Clear navigation, sensible page structure, proper headings and descriptive page titles all help search engines understand your site, and they help visitors find what they need. A good-looking site that’s slow or confusing will struggle. SEO is easiest when it’s built in from the start, which is how we approach custom website design. Browse our portfolio for examples.
Do mobile-friendliness and page speed really matter?
Yes. Google primarily uses the mobile version of your site for indexing and ranking, so a poor mobile experience affects everyone’s view of your site, not just phone users. Speed and stability are measured through Core Web Vitals (loading, responsiveness and visual stability). They’re not the only factor, but a slow site loses visitors before they read anything. Oversized images and bloated plugins are the usual culprits.
How important is written content for SEO?
Very. Search engines rank pages, and pages rank on what they say. Content should answer the questions your customers actually ask, in language they use, with enough detail to be helpful. Thin pages with a paragraph or two rarely compete. If writing isn’t your strength, our professional writing services can help.
Do online reviews help my rankings?
Reviews are widely considered a factor in local map rankings, and they clearly influence whether people choose to contact you. Ask happy customers for reviews as a regular habit and respond to all of them, including the negative ones. Never buy or fake reviews: it breaches Google’s policies and the ACCC treats fake reviews as misleading conduct under Australian Consumer Law.
Does website security affect SEO?
It can, significantly. A hacked site may be flagged with browser warnings, have spam pages injected into search results or be removed from results until it’s cleaned up. HTTPS is a baseline expectation. Keeping WordPress, themes and plugins updated is the simplest protection. Read about recovering from WordPress website hacks.
SEO now and in the future
How are AI search tools changing SEO?
Google’s AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT now answer some questions directly, which can mean fewer clicks for simple informational searches.
The fundamentals haven’t changed much, though: these tools draw on sites that are clear, accurate, well structured and trusted. For local service businesses, a strong Google Business Profile and genuinely helpful pages remain the priority. Follow SME News for updates as this develops.
Can I do SEO myself?
Many of the basics, yes: claiming your Google Business Profile, collecting reviews, writing useful service pages and keeping your site updated.
Where owners tend to need help is technical issues, content strategy and knowing what to prioritise with limited time. If you’d like guidance rather than a done-for-you service, our business mentoring can help you build the skills in-house.
